Maths Day in P5/6
P5/6 linked their 'Maths Day' activities to their World Around Us topic 'Earth and Space'.
For the first activity, children worked out how old they would be on each planet. They had to use their problem solving skills to identify the steps they should follow. Then they applied skills of division and multiplication. This activity introduced the children to the idea that each planet orbits the sun, but that each takes a different length of time - meaning each planet's year is a different length.
The second activity involved using scale to work out the relative distance between Earth and the other planets. The children had to use their knowledge of place value to divide the real distance between each planet to find the distance they would measure. Children then measured the distance on the playground using Trundle wheels.
Other activities included calculating when each planet would complete a single rotation - developing their use of clocks, calendars and understanding about each planet. Using co-ordinates to build an understanding of constellations.
A great day of fun Maths activities.
